NEXT GEN is back in 2026/2027

Next Gen Dragon Boat Program

The Next Gen Program is DBACT’s junior development pathway for young people who are new to dragon boating or looking to take their paddling to the next level.

The program gives young paddlers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of dragon boating, build confidence on and off the water, make new friends and discover what it takes to become part of a competitive crew.

The 2026/27 season will be delivered in two stages, taking paddlers from an introductory program through to competition-focused training.

🚣 Next Gen Program

6 weeks | November & December

The six-week Next Gen Program is designed for beginners and new paddlers. No previous dragon boating experience is required.

Paddlers will learn the fundamentals in a supportive and fun environment while developing the skills and confidence needed to continue in the sport.

Wednesdays 4:30-5:30pm (6 weeks)

What will we cover?

🛶 Basic paddling technique
💪 Paddle fitness and endurance
🌊 Water safety
🤝 Teamwork and communication
🏁 Introduction to racing

🏆 Next Gen Club

6 weeks | January & February

For paddlers ready to take the next step, the Next Gen Club will begin in mid-January.

Paddlers identified through the Next Gen Program will be invited to join this more focused training squad, which is designed to prepare young athletes for higher-level racing and competition. 6 week program. Which includes a Next Gen Club shirt!

Training will build on the skills developed during the introductory program, with a greater emphasis on:

Advanced paddling technique
Race starts and finishes
Crew work and race strategy
Fitness and conditioning
Race preparation and competition skills

The Next Gen Club will run through to the DBACT Junior Regatta at the end of February, with the opportunity for paddlers to continue training afterwards if they wish to compete at the 2027 Australian Dragon Boat Championships
